How a Crown Wheel and Pinion Works

In a rear-wheel-drive or four-wheel-drive vehicle, the propeller shaft delivers torque to the pinion, a small spiral bevel gear at the front of the differential. The pinion meshes with the crown wheel, a larger ring gear that turns the differential carrier and the axle shafts.

This gear pair performs two jobs: it changes the direction of drive by 90 degrees, and it reduces speed while multiplying torque. The ratio between the number of teeth on the crown wheel and the pinion determines the final drive ratio. A worn crown wheel and pinion will produce whining noise, vibration or metal debris in the differential oil — at that point the matched pair must be replaced together, not individually.
